THE ARTWORK
"View of Rome from Monte Pincio" is an albumen photo print by Robert Macpherson from 1863. This classical image leads the viewer past the fountain basin and via the bench through the frame of leafy boughs to the city in the distance. Rising there is the dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica. Subtly placed at the left are two watering cans, and the profile of the sky and trees is repeated in the reflecting pool.
THE ARTIST
Robert Macpherson (1811-1872) was a pioneering photographer who captured the essence of Rome during the mid-19th century. Born in Scotland in 1811, Macpherson initially pursued a career in medicine, working as a surgeon in Edinburgh. However, his passion for art led him to photography in the 1850s. He quickly mastered the new technology, becoming a leading figure in early photography.
In search of artistic inspiration, Macpherson relocated to Rome around 1850 for health reasons. This move proved pivotal, shaping his photographic career. Rome, with its rich history, ancient ruins, and stunning architecture, became Macpherson's muse. He dedicated himself to documenting the city's grandeur, producing a vast collection of photographs. His subjects ranged from iconic landmarks like the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain to picturesque streetscapes and hidden piazzas.
Macpherson's photographs were known for their clarity, detail, and meticulous composition. He employed innovative techniques, including the albumen silver print process, to achieve exceptional quality.
