THE ARTWORK

This woodcut engraving by Richard Ten Eyck depicts the Corliss Beam Steam Engine on show at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876. The Centennial International Exhibition, officially the International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures, and Products of the Soil and Mine, was held in Philadelphia from May 10 to November 10, 1876.

The Corliss steam engine, named after its inventor George Henry Corliss, was a significant advancement in steam engine technology during the 19th century. It was a type of reciprocating steam engine, known for its efficiency, reliability, and use in various industrial applications.

One of the key innovations of the Corliss engine was its use of separate valves to control the admission of steam into the engine's cylinders. These valves, known as Corliss valves, allowed for more precise control over the steam flow, resulting in improved efficiency and reduced steam consumption compared to earlier steam engines.

The Corliss engine was characterized by its large, imposing appearance, with massive beams and flywheels dominating its design. It was commonly used in factories, mills, and power plants to drive machinery such as pumps, generators, and industrial equipment.
