THE ARTWORK

"Old Christmas" is a collection of essays and stories by Washington Irving, originally published in 1819. Randolph Caldecott, renowned for his lively and imaginative illustrations, contributed his artistic talents to an edition of "Old Christmas" published in 1882. Caldecott's illustrations beautifully complement Irving's nostalgic and heartwarming tales of Christmas traditions in England. This etching is one of the illustrations for the Christmas Eve story.

In his illustrations for "Old Christmas," Caldecott captured the essence of rural English life during the holiday season. His detailed and charming depictions of cozy cottages, bustling village scenes, and jovial characters immersed readers in the warmth and cheer of an old-fashioned Christmas.
