THE ARTWORK
This poster imagines a sightseeing tour of Saturn's moon Enceladus, taking travellers through the plumes of the giant ice geysers erupting from its south pole. There's no right way up in space, so for fun, the surface was turned upside down from the point of view of the visitors in the picture.
The discovery of Enceladus' icy jets and their role in creating Saturn's E-ring is one of the top findings of the Cassini mission to Saturn. Further Cassini mission discoveries revealed strong evidence of a global ocean and the first signs of potential hydrothermal activity beyond Earth – making this tiny Saturnian moon one of the leading locations in the search for possible life beyond Earth.
THE ARTIST
"Visions of the Future" by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is a captivating series of retro-style space tourism posters that imagine future travel to distant worlds. These posters combine art and science to inspire curiosity about space exploration, showcasing potential destinations like Mars, Europa, and exoplanets such as Kepler-16b. Each poster highlights the unique characteristics of these celestial bodies, from ice-covered moons to planets orbiting two suns, reflecting cutting-edge discoveries and ambitions.
The project embodies the spirit of adventure and optimism, illustrating the idea that space travel may one day become as common as vacations on Earth. The artwork draws inspiration from vintage travel posters of the early 20th century, with a modern twist, connecting the excitement of past explorations to future possibilities. By blending artistic imagination and scientific research, "Visions of the Future" invites viewers to dream of a universe waiting to be explored.
