MORIZ JUNG - Greyhound
MORIZ JUNG - Greyhound
THE ARTWORK
Moriz Jung's "Greyhound" is a striking woodcut print created in 1912 . It was originally designed as a postcard for the Wiener Werkstätte, a Viennese art collective that aimed to bridge the gap between fine arts and applied design.
The artwork features a stylized greyhound depicted with bold black lines against a vibrant turquoise background. The dog's sleek form and elongated legs are characteristic of the breed, while the geometric shapes and simplified forms reflect the Wiener Werkstätte's design principles. The contrasting use of color and line creates a sense of dynamism and movement, capturing the essence of the greyhound's speed and agility.
"Greyhound" is considered a significant piece of early 20th-century graphic design. It exemplifies the Wiener Werkstätte's approach to combining modern aesthetics with traditional craftsmanship. The print remains popular today, admired for its clean lines, bold colors, and its portrayal of a graceful canine.
THE ARTIST
Moriz Jung (1885-1915) was an Austrian graphic artist associated with the Viennese Secession, a movement that sought to break away from traditional academic art and embrace modernism. Jung was known for his innovative use of typography and design elements in posters, book covers, and other printed materials.
As a member of the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop), Jung contributed significantly to the development of modern graphic design in Austria. He collaborated with other prominent artists and designers of the time, such as Gustav Klimt and Koloman Moser, to create visually striking and influential works.
Jung's designs often combined geometric shapes, bold colors, and stylized typography to convey messages with clarity and impact. His work reflected the ethos of the Secessionist movement, which aimed to unite art with everyday life and promote artistic expression across various mediums.
Tragically, Moriz Jung's life was cut short when he was killed in action during World War I in 1915. Despite his brief career, his contributions to graphic design continue to be celebrated for their artistic innovation and influence on the development of modern design in Austria.
