THE ARTWORK
"Papillons, Paons, Oiseaux, Capricornes & Sauterelles (Butterflies, Peacocks, Birds, Capricorns & Grasshoppers)" is a chromolithograph by Maurice Pillard Verneuil and is Plate 30 from his famous work "L'Animal dans la Décoration", published in 1897 in collaboration with Eugène Grasset.
The French text from the original print reads: "Papillons et pavots, veilleuse émaux translucides. Paons, vase émaux cloisonnés. Oiseaux tenture. Capricornes, jeu de fond. Sauterelles, bordure." This translates to "Butterflies and poppies, translucent enamel night light. Peacocks, cloisonné enamel vase. Birds wall hanging. Capricorns, background game. Grasshoppers, border."
"L'Animal dans la Décoration (The Animal In Decoration)" is a seminal work in decorative arts. It explores the use of animal motifs in artistic expression during the Art Nouveau period. The book showcases diverse examples, from naturalistic to abstract interpretations, sourced from global cultures. Highlighting the symbolic importance of animals in art, it offers inspiration for artisans and designers while contributing to the discourse on the relationship between nature and ornamentation. This influential publication remains a valuable resource for understanding the aesthetic trends of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
THE ARTIST
Maurice Pillard Verneuil (1869-1942) was a French artist and designer who made significant contributions to the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. His work spanned various mediums, including illustration, graphic design, ceramics, and jewelry.
Verneuil was renowned for his intricate decorative designs inspired by natural forms, particularly botanical motifs. He had a keen eye for color and composition, which he skillfully incorporated into his creations. Verneuil's style often featured stylized flowers, foliage, and geometric patterns, characterized by sinuous lines and harmonious arrangements.
One of his most notable achievements was his collaboration with the renowned art publisher, Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts, where he produced a series of pattern books that became influential sources for designers of the Art Nouveau era. These books showcased Verneuil's innovative designs, which were widely acclaimed for their elegance and originality.
In addition to his work in graphic design, Verneuil also applied his artistic talents to other fields. He designed ceramics for prestigious manufacturers such as Sèvres and created exquisite jewelry featuring his signature Art Nouveau motifs.
