MAURICE VERNEUIL - Capucine, Nasturtium
THE ARTWORK
"Capucine" by Maurice Verneuil is Plate 41 from Eugène Grasset's "La Plante et ses Applications Ornementales (The Plant and its Ornamental Applications)", published in 1896. It exemplifies the Art Nouveau movement's embrace of natural forms and intricate patterns. Verneuil, a prominent decorative artist and designer, collaborated with Grasset to illustrate the aesthetic potential of plants in ornamental design. In "Capucine," Verneuil focuses on the nasturtium, or "capucine" in French, highlighting its vibrant flowers and lush foliage. The illustration is characterized by its flowing lines and stylized representation, emphasizing the plant's organic beauty and rhythmic patterns. This piece not only showcases the artistic skill of Verneuil but also embodies the Art Nouveau ethos of harmonizing nature with art. Through "Capucine," Verneuil and Grasset aimed to inspire designers and artists to draw from the natural world, integrating botanical elements into decorative arts to enhance visual appeal and create a seamless blend between nature and design.
THE ARTIST
Maurice Pillard Verneuil (1869-1942) was a versatile French artist and designer who made significant contributions to the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. His work spanned various mediums, including illustration, graphic design, ceramics, and jewelry.
Verneuil was renowned for his intricate decorative designs inspired by natural forms, particularly botanical motifs. He had a keen eye for color and composition, which he skillfully incorporated into his creations. Verneuil's style often featured stylized flowers, foliage, and geometric patterns, characterized by sinuous lines and harmonious arrangements.
One of his most notable achievements was his collaboration with the renowned art publisher, Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts, where he produced a series of pattern books that became influential sources for designers of the Art Nouveau era. These books showcased Verneuil's innovative designs, which were widely acclaimed for their elegance and originality.
In addition to his work in graphic design, Verneuil also applied his artistic talents to other fields. He designed ceramics for prestigious manufacturers such as Sèvres and created exquisite jewelry featuring his signature Art Nouveau motifs.
