JEAN AUGUSTE INGRES - La Princesse de Broglie
JEAN AUGUSTE INGRES - La Princesse de Broglie
THE ARTWORK
"La Princesse de Broglie" is an oil-on-canvas portrait painted by the French Neoclassical artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres between 1851 and 1853. It features Pauline de Broglie (1825-1860), a young aristocrat known for her beauty and intelligence who was also the wife of Albert de Broglie, the 28th Prime Minister of France. The painting suggests a melancholic demeanor, perhaps reflecting her shyness.
Ingres, a master of Neoclassicism, depicts Pauline in a lavish blue satin gown and a richly embroidered shawl. He meticulously renders the textures of her clothing and the damask chair she leans on, contrasting them with the soft gray background. A hidden detail, a fictional coat of arms, hints at her aristocratic lineage.
THE ARTIST
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) was a leading French Neoclassical painter renowned for his precise draftsmanship and devotion to classical beauty. Born in Montauban, France, Ingres trained under Jacques-Louis David, absorbing his master’s emphasis on clarity, order, and idealism. Ingres excelled in creating detailed portraits and historical scenes, often infusing his works with a sense of calm and timeless elegance.
His paintings, such as "La Grande Odalisque" and "The Apotheosis of Homer," showcase his skill in rendering the human form with anatomical accuracy and smooth, polished surfaces. Ingres was also a master of portraiture, capturing the likeness and character of his subjects with meticulous care, as seen in works like "Madame Moitessier" and "La Princesse de Broglie."
Despite facing criticism for his perceived rigidity and resistance to Romanticism, Ingres’ work profoundly influenced later artists. His dedication to line and form left a lasting legacy on 19th-century art.
