GEORGES SEURAT - Courbevoie: Factories by Moonlight
THE ARTWORK
“Courbevoie: Factories by Moonlight” is a conté crayon drawing by Georges Seurat from 1883.
Courbevoie is a suburban commune in the department of Hauts-de-Seine, northwest of Paris, France. In the late 19th century, it emerged as a hub for factories and manufacturing, attracting the attention of artists seeking to depict the changing urban landscape. Seurat's "Courbevoie: Factories by Moonlight" epitomizes this interest, portraying the town's industrial scenery under the soft illumination of the moon.
THE ARTIST
Georges Seurat (1859-1891), a French post-Impressionist artist, left a vibrant mark on the art world despite his short career. Born in Paris, he defied artistic norms, developing the ground-breaking Pointillism technique. This method used tiny dots of color, which, when viewed from afar, blended into a luminous and shimmering scene.
Seurat wasn't just about innovation. He meticulously studied scientific theories of light and color, ensuring his Pointillist paintings were a calculated explosion of vibrancy. His most famous work, "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" (1884-1886), exemplifies this perfectly.
Though Pointillism faced initial criticism, Seurat's dedication and the technique's undeniable beauty paved the way for future artists. Tragically, Seurat's life was cut short when he died of an illness at the age of just 31. Despite his premature death, he's remembered as a pivotal figure who transformed the way we see color and light in art.
