THE ARTWORK
"L'Arbre de science, Robe du soir de Doeuillet (The Tree Of Science, Evening Dress By Doeuillet)" is a fashion illustration by George Barbier created in 1914 for the fashion magazine Gazette du Bon Ton, issue no. 8, plate 80.
The illustration features a woman in a flowing evening gown designed by the Parisian fashion house Maison Douillet.
THE ARTIST
Georges Barbier (1882–1932) was a French illustrator, designer, and fashion artist whose work epitomized the elegance and sophistication of the Art Deco era. Born in Nantes, France, Barbier rose to prominence in the early 20th century through his exquisite fashion illustrations, which graced the pages of leading fashion magazines such as Gazette du Bon Ton, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar.
Barbier's artistry was characterized by his meticulous attention to detail, vibrant use of color, and graceful depictions of elegant figures adorned in luxurious clothing. He was particularly renowned for his ability to capture the essence of the haute couture of his time, creating glamorous and alluring images that epitomized the spirit of the Jazz Age.
In addition to his fashion illustrations, Barbier also contributed to the world of theater and costume design, collaborating with renowned figures such as Sergei Diaghilev and Jeanne Paquin. His work often incorporated elements of fantasy and exoticism, transporting viewers to sumptuous and exotic settings filled with decadence and allure.

Arches BFK Rives is a high-quality, archival-grade paper manufactured at the Arches paper mill in France - one of the oldest papermakers in Europe. It is made from 100% cotton rag using a time-honoured manufacturing process, giving the paper exceptional durability, longevity, and resistance to yellowing or deterioration over time. Despite its substantial weight and thickness it maintains a very soft and supple feel. The paper has a natural white tone and is completely free of any optical brighteners (OBAs), allowing for superb colour rendition and deep blacks.
