THE ARTWORK
The "Salon des Cent, 2nd Exhibition" poster by Eugène Grasset is a notable example of Art Nouveau graphic design from the late 19th century. Created in 1894 to promote the second Salon des Cent exhibition, this poster exemplifies Grasset's distinctive style and his mastery of the Art Nouveau aesthetic.
THE ARTIST
The Swiss artist and graphic designer Eugène Grasset (1845-1917) was a major figure in the Art Nouveau movement. Raised by a sculptor father, he honed his artistic skills in drawing and architecture. His travels to Egypt and his admiration for Japanese art influenced his work.
Grasset excelled in various art forms. He crafted furniture, jewelry, and architectural elements. He's particularly recognized for his posters, some featured in the "Maîtres de l'Affiche" collection. His success extended to the US, where he designed magazine covers and contributed to the rise of Art Nouveau there.
Grasset was also an educator, teaching design at prestigious Parisian schools. He even designed a typeface based on the work of another artist, Nicolas Jenson. Grasset's legacy lives on through his creations and the influence he had on his students, who themselves became prominent artists.
