ERNST HAECKEL - Discomedusae
ERNST HAECKEL - Discomedusae
THE ARTWORK
"Discomedusae", is Plate 98 from "Kunstformen der Natur (Artforms of Nature)", a monumental work by the German biologist Ernst Haeckel, first published in 1904. This book comprises a collection of intricate and visually stunning illustrations of organisms, primarily marine microorganisms such as radiolarians, medusae, and diatoms.
Discomedusae is a subclass of jellyfish within the class Scyphozoa and a major jellyfish group with about 155 identified species, and likely many more to discover. Compared to their close relatives, Coronamedusae, Discomedusae jellyfish are known to form large swarms or blooms.
Haeckel's illustrations in "Kunstformen der Natur" are renowned for their accuracy and artistic beauty. They depict the intricate structures and symmetrical patterns found in various species, showcasing the diversity and complexity of life forms. Haeckel's artistic approach to scientific illustration aimed not only to document biological specimens but also to inspire awe and appreciation for the natural world.
THE ARTIST
Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) was a German biologist, naturalist, and artist, renowned for his contributions to evolutionary theory and his stunning illustrations. He coined key biological terms like "ecology" and "phylum," and popularized Darwin's ideas in Germany. Despite controversies surrounding his work, Haeckel's impact on science and culture is profound. His intricate drawings of microscopic organisms and evolutionary trees not only advanced scientific understanding but also inspired generations of scientists and artists alike. Haeckel's legacy is complex; while some of his ideas have been superseded, his influence on fields ranging from biology to art remains undeniable, making him a significant figure in the history of science.
