EDWARD PENFIELD - Two Roosters In A Field
EDWARD PENFIELD - Two Roosters In A Field
THE ARTWORK
Edward Penfield's "Two Roosters in a Field" (1898) is a prime example of his bold and simplified poster style. This lithograph was used as the cover for the May 1898 edition of Harper’s New Monthly Magazine. The work features exactly what the title describes: two roosters facing each other in a grassy field.
The roosters are depicted in a flat, almost geometric style, with minimal detail. The focus is on the strong shapes and contrasting colors – the bright red of one rooster against the black of the other.
This work perfectly embodies Penfield's philosophy of creating clear and concise visuals that deliver an immediate impact.
THE ARTIST
Edward Penfield (1866–1925) was an influential American illustrator and poster designer, renowned for his pivotal role in shaping the visual identity of the American magazine industry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in New York City, Penfield studied at the Art Students League of New York and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He began his career as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly and later became the art editor of Harper's Monthly Magazine.
Penfield's distinctive style, characterized by bold lines, flat colors, and simplified forms, revolutionized magazine cover design and advertising. His iconic posters, often promoting books, plays, and products, helped define the emerging American advertising aesthetic. Penfield's work not only captured the essence of the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements but also foreshadowed modern graphic design.
