THE ARTWORK

This amazing lithograph, commonly known as "Marine Life", is Plate 28 from "Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe (The Plant in Art and Craft)" by Anton Seder. It features different decorative elements depicting a coral reef teeming with fish. The artist used vibrant colors and swirling forms to create a sense of movement and life underwater. The panel in the bottom left corner lists the algae species depicted as "Nereocystis luetkeana" - Bull Kelp, "Epineuron spirale", "Padina pavonica" - Peacock's Tail, "Sargassum", "Hypoglossum" - red algae and "Laminaria saccharina" - Sugar Kelp.

"Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe" is a two-volume publication by Anton Seder, published in collaboration with Martin Gerlach and artist contributors in Vienna from 1886-1890. It's a stunning collection of chromolithographic plates depicting a wide variety of plants with the intention of inspiring artists and designers working in the decorative arts.

THE ARTIST

Anton Seder (1850–1916) was a prominent German artist, architect, and designer known for his contributions to the Art Nouveau movement. Born in Nuremberg, Seder studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and later became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. He was also the first Director of the new "École supérieure des arts décoratifs de Strasbourg" from 1890.

Seder's work was characterized by its intricate detail, organic motifs, and innovative use of materials. He was particularly renowned for his designs in stained glass, which adorned numerous churches, public buildings, and private residences across Germany.

In addition to his work in stained glass, Seder was also a skilled painter, illustrator, and architect. He created a wide range of artworks, including murals, tapestries, and decorative panels, often incorporating elements of nature and mythology.

Seder's influence extended beyond his artistic endeavors. He played a significant role in the development of design education, advocating for a holistic approach that integrated art, craft, and technology. His teachings emphasized the importance of harmony between form and function, foreshadowing the principles of modern design.
