THE ARTWORK

Alexander Dux’s "See America" poster, part of the 1930s Works Progress Administration (WPA) Federal Art Project, depicts the stunning Carlsbad Caverns in vivid blues. The poster was created for the United States Travel Bureau to promote domestic tourism during the Great Depression, encouraging Americans to explore the country's natural wonders. Dux’s design captures the awe-inspiring beauty of the caverns, using modernist techniques with simplified forms and bold lines. The vivid blue tones evoke the mysterious, cool depths of the caverns, enhancing their allure.

THE ARTIST

Alexander Dux was a German-American artist and illustrator born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in 1900. He became known for his contributions to the visual arts in the early to mid-20th century. Dux emigrated to the United States in 1921, settling in New York City, where he became active in the art scene.

His work spanned various media, including painting, illustration, and design, often reflecting the influences of modernism and surrealism. He contributed illustrations to several well-known publications, including The New Yorker and Harper's Bazaar, showcasing his ability to blend humor and social commentary into his work. Dux was also involved in the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression, which supported artists by commissioning public works.

In addition to his illustration work, Alexander Dux created fine art pieces that were exhibited in galleries across the United States and Europe. His art often depicted abstract forms and imaginative landscapes, characterized by bold colors and playful shapes.

Dux's contributions to the art world made him a prominent figure in both commercial and fine art, leaving a lasting impression on the American art scene before his death in 1978.
