This is one of Adolphe Millot's iconic lithograph illustrations from the 7-volume "Nouveau Larousse Illustré" encyclopedia, published between 1897 & 1904, and the immensely popular single volume "Petit Larousse" (1905) encyclopedic dictionary.
THE ARTIST
Adolphe Millot (1857–1921) was a French painter, lithographer and entomologist whose prolific career left a lasting mark on educational publications and dictionaries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Paris, Millot's artistic talent was evident from a young age. He received formal training at the prestigious École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, studying under renowned artists such as Jules-Elie Delaunay and Jean-Léon Gérôme. He later held the prestigious role of senior illustrator at France's National Museum of Natural History.
Millot's illustrations were characterized by their meticulous attention to detail, vibrant colors, and clear presentation. He specialized in creating visual aids for educational purposes, producing diagrams, maps, and illustrations covering a wide range of subjects including science, history, geography, and literature. His works were esteemed for their accuracy and didactic value, becoming essential tools in classrooms, libraries, and homes across France and beyond.

Arches BFK Rives is a high-quality, archival-grade paper manufactured at the Arches paper mill in France - one of the oldest papermakers in Europe. It is made from 100% cotton rag using a time-honoured manufacturing process, giving the paper exceptional durability, longevity, and resistance to yellowing or deterioration over time. Despite its substantial weight and thickness it maintains a very soft and supple feel. The paper has a natural white tone and is completely free of any optical brighteners (OBAs), allowing for superb colour rendition and deep blacks.
